Aims, Vision, and Mission of IEM Young Engineers Section (YES)

Aims:

The IEM Young Engineers Section (YES) strives to empower and connect the next generation of engineers by providing a dynamic platform for learning, networking, and innovation. Through industry exposure and skills development programs, YES equips young engineers with the tools to excel in an evolving engineering landscape while fostering collaboration across students, graduates, and industry professionals.

Vision:

To be the leading platform for young engineers in Malaysia, cultivating future-ready professionals who drive engineering excellence, innovation, and sustainability.

Mission:
  • Professional Development: Facilitate continuous learning and career growth through knowledge-sharing sessions, industry visits, and skills-building programs.
  • Innovation & Sustainability: Encourage young engineers to embrace cutting-edge technologies and sustainable practices, aligning with global trends and UN Sustainable Development Goals.
  • Community & Industry Engagement: Strengthen the engineering ecosystem by bridging academia, industry, and policymakers, creating opportunities for young engineers to contribute to nation-building.
  • Global Connectivity: Expand international collaborations and exposure, enabling young engineers to be competitive in a globalized engineering landscape.

Through these initiatives, IEM YES remains at the forefront of shaping Malaysia’s engineering future—where young engineers don’t just adapt to change, but lead it.

About YES

The Young Engineers Section (YES) is a subdivision of the Institution of Engineers, Malaysia (IEM), dedicated to nurturing young engineers and providing them with exposure to the professional engineering world. YES serves as a vital link between graduate engineers and engineering students, offering mentorship and guidance throughout their academic and professional journeys. Through various networking events, young engineers can receive guidance on topics ranging from academic insights to the latest industry trends.

YES plays an essential role in providing engineering students with opportunities to apply their knowledge and acquire new skills beyond their lectures. Industry visits organized by YES make learning more practical and engaging, effectively bridging the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical application.

In the wake of the pandemic, YES has expanded its offerings through online webinars, virtual gatherings, and STEM competitions, ensuring that students remain connected to their studies. These initiatives contribute to providing quality education for those with limited access to such opportunities, aligning with SDG 4: Quality Education.

YES also serves a platform for young practicing engineers to discover new talents and implement innovative ideas. The creativity and fresh perspectives brought by young engineers support industry innovation and the development of modern engineering solutions. YES fosters partnerships between experienced engineers and young engineers, blending years of experience with new approaches, thus fostering partnerships for sustainable development, in line with SDG 17: Partnerships for the Goals.

In addition to these core roles, YES's activities resonate with several other UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). By organizing projects focused on sustainable engineering practices and promoting energy efficiency, such as the sustainability pitching competition, YES contributes to SDG 7: Affordable and Clean Energy. Through workshops and seminars on sustainable urban development and technical visitation to green buildings, YES supports SDG 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities, emphasizing resilient infrastructure and inclusive urbanization.

YES also prioritizes SDG 9: Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure by encouraging young engineers to engage in innovative projects that enhance industrial processes and infrastructure development. Furthermore, by fostering an inclusive community and promoting gender equality within the engineering field, YES aligns with SDG 5: Gender Equality, ensuring that opportunities are available to all, regardless of gender.

YES's commitment to environmental sustainability is reflected in initiatives that promote responsible consumption and production, aligning with SDG 12: Responsible Consumption and Production. This includes encouraging young engineers to adopt and advocate for sustainable practices in their professional and personal lives. Through these efforts, YES not only enhances the educational and professional development of young engineers but also significantly advances the engineering industry in Malaysia. By aligning its activities with multiple SDGs, YES demonstrates a holistic approach to fostering a sustainable and inclusive future for all.
