SYNOPSIS
my Heavy vehicle crashes can cause severe damage to lives, property, and infrastructure. Understanding their root causes helps in developing countermeasures. This presentation, based on Dr. Hanowski’s research in the USA, will identify key factors in heavy vehicle crashes and discuss technological solutions including Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) and Autonomous Driving Systems (ADS). The presentation will also include a case study of trucking fleets that improved their safety records and reveal the secrets of their success.
BIODATA OF SPEAKER
Dr. Richard Hanowski
Dr. Richard Hanowski is a Senior Research Scientist at Virginia Tech and is the founder, and previous Director, of the Division of Freight, Transit, & Heavy Vehicle Safety at the Virginia Tech Transportation Institute. Dr. Hanowski has been involved in transportation human factors research since 1991 and has served as the Principal Investigator or Co-PI on over $100 million of contract research, resulting in over 300 publications. He is focused on action able health and safety research that leads to improved road safety and are duction in global road crashes. His research has impacted national transportation policy, including his work for the United States Department of Transportation related to truck driver fatigue/hours-of-service and driver distraction/texting. Dr. Hanowski received his Ph.D. in Industrial and Systems Engineering in 2000 from Virginia Tech and is a 2024-2025 Fulbright Scholar at the Universiti Malaya.
