SYNOPSIS
Last year, the government has gazette Energy Efficiency and Conservation Act (EECA). The EECA replaces the Efficient Management of Electrical Energy Regulations (EMEER) 2008. Under the EECA industries that consume 21600 GJ over a period of one year shall need to appoint a Registered Energy Manager (REM) to manage the energy efficiency consumption by implementing energy management system. All the Registered Electrical Energy Manager (REEM) now has to convert to a Registered Energy Manager (REM) Type 1 (electrical) or Type 2 (electrical & Thermal) according to the organization consumption type. EECA also introduces Registered Training Institution and Registered Energy Auditors.
Subsequently last month, Tenaga Nasional Bhd (TNB) announced a 14.2% increase in the electricity tariff for Peninsular Malaysia, starting July 1, 2025. Though the power utility says the new rate will not impact some 85% of households, the increase will definitely impact the industries where they account 80% of energy usage.
When the government put energy transition as one of the key economy driving factor, the industries and engineers have to respond to the challenges this year. The talk shall highlight how should the industries prepare for the EECA implementation and adjust their operation to buffer the looming increase in energy tariff. Will the challenges enhance the Sustainability initiatives that many organizations adopted now?
The speaker is one of the first REM Type 1 and 2 approved by ST and has involved in energy efficiency activities as a practitioner, trainer, consultant, auditor and certificatory for the past 15 years.
