SYNOPSIS

Despite growing traffic congestion and environmental challenges, Malaysian policymakers remain focused on outdated solutions like building new highways. In contrast, the younger generation is increasingly embracing micromobility options—such as e-bikes, electric scooters, and shared bicycles—for short trips. These options help avoid traffic, cut car ownership costs, and promote sustainability.

The Malaysian Transportation Master Plan acknowledges micromobility's potential but highlights the need for infrastructure improvements, including:

• Dedicated Lanes: Safe, weatherproof lanes for micromobility vehicles, with speed limits under
30 km/h and measures to prevent misuse by motorcycles.
• Pavement Design: Covered pavements to protect users in Malaysia's high humidity and frequent
   rainfall.
• Parking: Conversion of car parks into designated spaces for micromobility vehicles, improving
   access to public transport hubs.

Countries like Australia and Japan have successfully integrated micromobility into their transport systems. Malaysia can follow their lead to reduce congestion and enhance urban transport connectivity.
