SYNOPSIS
The KLIA2 fully-electric District Cooling Plant (DCP) plant by TNEC has an installed capacity of 18,000 Refrigeration Ton (RT). This plant has been operating since 2013. DCP essentially achieves savings by using night off-peak electricity tariffs to store cooling energy into Thermal Energy Storage (TES) tanks and the cooling energy is released via circulating chilled water during peak hours onto the buildings during daytime periods. Effectively doubly gaining from cheaper off-peak tariffs, avoiding expensive peak rates while lowering the TNB Maximum Demand (MD) charges. In addition, TNEC has in 2021 modernised the former KLIA gas-powered DCP to fully electric, resulting in the reduction of operating costs by over RM50 million per annum.
