SYNOPSIS

Successful project management, regardless of the project’s life cycle approach, depends on a thorough and complete planning process. This requires the project managers to successfully manage the constraints in their projects including scope, cost and time. Project scope management allows the project managers to manage project scope through the specific project management processes. One of the core processes for managing project scope is the create WBS process which creates the work breakdown structure or WBS for the project. WBS is a hierarchical decomposition of the total scope of work to be carried out by the project team to accomplish the project objectives and create the required deliverables. WBS represents the entirety of the work specified in the project scope. It helps in converting the entire project scope into a series of smaller components called work packages. WBS carry a fundamental role in many aspects of project management especially in planning and monitoring. This course will provide project managers with an understanding of WBS from planning, executing, monitoring and controlling and closing stages. Project managers will be able to comprehend the fundamental concepts in WBS from the defining the scope, creating WBS, the relationships of WBS with other processes including schedule, quality and risks, change management, communications and managing project scope through WBS throughout the project life cycle.

Objectives

•   To understand the fundamental concept of work breakdown structure or WBS. T
•   To understand how WBS is used through the project life cycle from planning, executing,
monitoring and controlling and closing stages.
•   To be able to use the create WBS process to develop WBS for their projects.

Learning Outcomes

•   Explain the main concepts and components in work breakdown structure or WBS.
•   Apply the processes in the project scope management to create and control WBS.

Target Participants

•   Executives
•   Managers
