SYNOPSIS
Hot tapping activities for pipelines has played major role in gas transmission facilities that requires major modification without impacting the current operation. Hot tapping is a critical technique used in pipeline maintenance and modification, allowing for connections to be made to existing pipelines online without shutting them down. Although this activities are quite common in the industry, the execution requires strict implementation on the design, materials integrity and safety aspect. A slight error may lead to catastrophic consequences.
This paper will discuss various aspects of hot tapping activities, including an overview, sequence, challenges and lessons learned from recent onshore pipeline projects. It highlights issues encountered during hot tapping, such as material defects and procedural shortcomings, and provides recommendations for improvement.
