SYNOPSIS
Microalgae have a lot going for them:
1. They have a large genetic base able to provide most biological molecules needed. 2. Need on average only about 1% of the land for biomass production used by plants. 3. According to the UN food conferences are the healthiest of all food.
In the past, algal biomass has been more expensive than plant biomass. However, over the years the costs have been coming down and now the tipping point has been reached making algal biomass competitive.
This is going to lead to an explosion of algal production requiring a whole range of engineering solutions. The talk will touch on the basic information and the major possibilities going forward.
