SYNOPSIS
Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) has become the first power utility provider in the ASEAN region to embark on the Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) project. The first phase of this project started in January 2018 and involved the installation of smart meters at over 340,000 domestic and low voltage commercial customer premises in Melaka. The second phase covered selected areas in the Klang Valley (Kuala Lumpur, Putrajaya, and Selangor) involving 1.2 million customers. By end of 2022, some 2.6 million smart meters have been installed. AMI is one of the key initiatives under Incentive Based Regulation as mandated to TNB by the Energy Commission. TNB plans to install a total of some 9.1 million smart meters beyond 2026.
AMI is an integrated system consisting of smart meters and a nationwide meter communication network. Other salient components include meter data management system, back-end IT systems. Smart phone and web based applications were incorporated to facilitate customer interactions. Radio Frequency Data links, Power Line Communications and Public Cellular Data Network are the three main communication technologies used for the first phase in Melaka.
